Peren, December 9 (MExN): The Chief Medical Office, Peren District held a one day orientation programme on Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PC-PNDT ACT) 1994 under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) on December 5.

It was organized by District Administration in collaboration with the Medical Department Peren at CMO Conference Hall, Chief Medical Office, New Headquarter, Peren.

The meeting was attended by the District Programme Officers, Medical Officers and Health workers from all the Health Centers, District and Block Program Management Unit Staff, NHM and DAPCU.

Dr Lanuakum, Dy CMO presented a power point highlighting that PC-PNDT ACT is an act to provide for the prohibition of sex selection, before or after conception, and for regulation of pre-natal diagnostic techniques for the purposes of detecting abnormalities or metabolic disorders or certain congenital malformations or sex-linked disorders and for the prevention of their misuse of sex determination leading to female feticide. 

The presentation highlighted the objective of this law: Prohibit sex selection(before or after conception), Regulate pre-natal diagnostic techniques for detecting genetic or metabolic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities or certain congenital mal- formations or sex linked disorders and Prevent misuse of such techniques for the purpose of sex determination of female feticides. It also includes the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Procedures; does the law allow the conduct of PNDT? The qualified persons: what is to be registered? Procedure of registration: renewal of registration: reservation of records offences and penalties: offences and penalties.

He also presented a power point on BBBP, its introduction- BBBP is a flagship programme run by the central government to ensure the survival, protection and education of girl child. The key elements of the scheme emphasise the importance of enforcing the PC & PNDT Act and the district authorities are required to effectively monitor and ensure that the sex determination tools are not misused by families and doctors and to take stringent legal action against them in case of violations. 

The PPT also stated that this scheme is to bring a change in people mindset towards girl child on or after her birth, preventing determination of sex and female foeticide, ensuring safety of girls by taking their best possible care, providing quality education are integral part of the programme.

The participants were also reminded and encouraged about the importance of institutional deliveries and early registration of pregnancy and ANC in the district.
