Oting SIT investigation is almost complete: Dy CM

Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland Yanthungo Patton on Monday informed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is almost done with the probe into the killings that took place in Oting on December 4 last year.

Informing this during a flagging off ceremony at the Police Headquarters, Kohima on Monday afternoon, Patton who is also the state’s Home Minister said that the investigation by the SIT was almost complete, pending a few documentation.

“The situation in our state by far has been largely peaceful, except for the highly condemnable act of Oting incident on December 4, 2021,” he said, while giving assurance that “justice shall be delivered to the innocent lives lost, in that carnage.”

The ceremony pertains to the flagging off of 11 newly purchased vehicles for the Superintendents of Police. 

Special drive to curb extortion
Stating that response to any situation, is one of the key functions for the Police Department, the Minister was optimistic that with better vehicles now being provided to the SPs, they shall lead from the front with alacrity and respond to any situations promptly. 

Commending the state Police for the recent major seizure of smuggled gold weighing approximately 48 Kgs costing over Rs 23 crore, Patton maintained the action called for appreciation and recognition. 

He also acknowledged the ‘improved detection’ of drugs, IMFL and contraband seizures being made by Nagaland Police, and said a special drive against drugs was on with the latest seizure of 1 lakh Yaba tablets worth approximately around Rs 5 crore by Dimapur Police. 

“I am sure that under the leadership of DGP, such special drives will continue, and the fight against drugs and other contraband shall continue for the welfare of the society and the younger generation,” the Minister said. 

Emphasising on the need to curb the menace of extortion in the state, Patton said that a special drive would be carried out against extortion more rigorously. “Nagaland Police needs to curb the menace of extortion and take stringent actions against UGs, anti-social elements, on a war footing,” he asserted. 

While stating that vigil along the Inter-State border is very important, the Minister also lauded the performance of the state IRB in the recently concluded Punjab election. The team is presently deployed in Manipur for the ongoing Assembly election. 

“I am sure the rank and file shall be the ambassadors of our State and perform their duties without fear or favor,” Patton added. 

He also appreciated the Police Department who under the leadership of the DGP, Nagaland has constituted the 'DGP Commendation Disc' in September 2021, wherein many officers and rank and file, who have been suitably awarded for their outstanding performances. 

Terming this as a good initiative, Patton was optimistic that this will encourage the Police force to perform better in all facets of policing.

Home Minister also assured his continued support, and also the support of the State Government to the Police Department to ensure law and order and better service delivery to the citizens. 

“Discipline is the watch word in the Police Department, and I am sure that the Department shall continue to function with renewed discipline and security service and sacrifice in discharging its duties” stated Patton.
