DIMAPUR, MARCH 5 (MExN): A consignment of restricted pharmaceutical drug – Spasmo Proxyvon, was caught in transit at Khuzama inter-state Narcotic check-post on March 4. The drug, totalling 17, 280 capsules, was recovered from a passenger travelling in an Imphal-bound taxi in the wee hours of March 4. The accused was identified as Md. Atawar Rahman, hailing from Khomitok Ipum Mapal, Imphal East.
According to the Excise Narcotic Cell, this is the third such instance involving taxi passengers this year.
The accused, who is suspected to be part of a large, well coordinated drug syndicate, had acquired the drug at Kolkata. According to the statement of the accused, he had bought the drug at an undisclosed pharmacy in Kolkata through the help of a contact based there. The drug was bought at Rs. 250 per box (containing 144 capsules), amounting to Rs. 30, 000 in total. He then took a train to Dimapur from where he got into a taxi bound for Imphal. The street value of a capsule of Spasmo in Imphal is said to be no less than Rs. 25. Its monetary worth increases as it crosses the international border into Myanma, where it is highly sought after by people involved in the manufacturing of hard drugs like heroine and brown sugar.
Between May 2012 till date, the Narcotic check-post at Khuzama have detected 10 drug-related cases, while seizing 3, 10, 760 capsules/tablets of restricted pharmaceutical drugs alongwith 200 bottles of cough syrup.
