As hundreds of students of Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) rejoiced after being conferred degree in their respective subjects, they received three valuable life-lessons before finally leaving the corridors of their alma mater and embarking on new career paths.
Vice chancellor, Nagaland University, Prof. Pardeshi Lal, in his address at the PCC’s 4th convocation (Classes of 2016, 2017 and 2018) held at Bundrock Chapel-Auditorium, on Wednesday, shared three life-lessons - private victory precedes public victory, power of double creation and power of synergistic growth.
On the first lesson, the VC said there are three kinds of people in the world: those who make things happen (good things), those who watch things happen, and those who do not know what is happening.
“Today as we celebrate your graduation, think of all the hours, days, weeks, months and years that you had put to see this day. Most of those efforts were in the privacy of your thoughts and actions in the way you had disciplined yourself towards achieving your goals, the study hours behind closed doors, the endless hours listening to lectures and the resoluteness to be a winner, no matter what,” Prof. Lal said.
He said the determination, the courage, the perseverance and the conviction to succeed are forces that are driven within or, in other words, one’s overall personality maybe described as inner-driven. Lal said inner-driven people are those who, in their privacy, prepare for great things to happen for themselves and for those that they love. On the other hand, people who are outside-driven are at the mercy of circumstances: the weather can decide their mood and they float around and allow themselves to be dictated by circumstances outside their control.
He said all successful people, whether in the world of sports, music, film, corporate or academia train themselves in private, away from the glare of others and the limelight of the media.
“They come out in the open only when they are adequately trained and prepared to compete at the highest level; and, therefore, they are successful in their given arena of expertise. This reinforces the fact that private victory is the foundation for public victory,” Lal said.
On power of double creation and imagination, the VC said everything is created twice, the first “mental creation” and the second “physical creation”. Taking the analogy of a painter, Lal said the painter has “seen” or visualized the picture or portrait he is about to paint long before his brush touches the canvas and added the beauty or goodness of the second creation (physical) depends on how beautiful or good the first creation (mental) is.
“Can you ‘see’ yourself as the main reason for your own happiness and those of your loved ones? What is your mental creation for your life and wellbeing? Remember, your first creation will determine your second creation,” the professor said.
Further, the VC said quality education is crucial for bringing about a new sense of hope and optimism for the present generation mired in deep sense of fear for future wellbeing of the society at large.
“When each of you can be the beacon of hope in whatever position you may be in, you can truly be the cause for synergetic growth-socially, economically and politically. The question is: are you ready to be the harbingers of positive and sustainable environment of hope and optimism. When we are effective in our given field, the synergetic growth is exponential,” Lal said.
Earlier, Rev. Dr. W Pongsing, chairman, board of trustees PCC, said the convocation is also a celebration of PCC as an Autonomous College (UGC), with ‘A’ Grade with CGPA of 3.24 (NAAC), a college with “Potential for Excellence” (UGC), which has so far produced 6020 UGs and PGs since 1980.
