The Public Coordination Committee (PCC) comprising of the ACAUT Nagaland, Public Service Aspirants of Nagaland and the Combined Technical Association of Nagaland began its hunger strike today in Kohima. The agitators assembled outside the Nagaland Civil Secretariat as the 19th session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly progressed.

Revoking the October 26 Office Memorandum that placed Grade III posts outside the purview of the NPSC, implementing Lokayukta and declaring answer keys of exams conducted by the NPSC were its main demands. While the Lokayukta Bill was passed in the Assembly, the agitators expressed disappointment that the government ignored its two other demands. “We were expecting the government to revoke the October 26 OM as well give a positive decision with regard to the declaring of answer keys. We are disappointed these two issues were ignored,” the PCC convenor Tia Longchar said Friday evening.

As a result, the PCC convenor said that the agitators will continue with the hunger strike till the other two demands are fulfilled or till the Chief Minister gives an assurance. “We are seeking an assurance from the Chief Minister.”

Asked whether the government has sent out feelers to the agitators, the convenor said they received information about the CM likely to contact them later in the evening. The CM was said to have been attending a party-related meeting after the Assembly session. “We received information that the CM will get back to us after the (party) meeting.”

Meanwhile, the agitators received support from unexpected quarters as people turned up at the venue with blankets and firewood. Appreciating the solidarity and the company received, the agitators said that the gesture will not only keep them warm during the night but would also encourage them to persevere.
