Dimapur, October 13 (MExN): As part of its efforts to make Nagaland a model state for peace building by 2030, a two-day training of trainers on skill development on ‘Peace Building and Conflict Resolution’ organized by Peace Channel started on October 12.

A report on the event from the Peace Channel desk informed that animators of Peace Channel were trained at North East Institute of Social sciences and Research (NEISSR) Conference Hall, Dimapur.

With the main objective to enhance knowledge and skills, the animators and trainers of Peace Channel were trained on peace building skills, formation of peace clubs, formation of peer mediation and peace forums etc., it said.

According to the report, Dr Fr CP Anto underscored that a ‘separate ministry’ like that of the Philippines, Rwanda and other countries in African region was needed in order to bring a lasting solution to the issues faced by the people of Nagaland.

The trainers were trained to form and maintain Peace Forums which are groups of likeminded adults, religious and community leaders, women and youths, who are committed to work for peace and prevent all forms of conflicts in the communities. Trained on peace building skills like dialogue, mediation and facilitation etc., the members come together to discuss issues, clarify them, rectify them and resolve it by following certain programmes and processes in the movement in order to ensure peace, justice, sustainable development and harmony, the report stated.

The Forums are one of the fundamental functional bodies of the peace movement that brings adults together irrespective of tribe, religion, and region to promote peace and harmony, prevent and intervene in conflicts at village level, district level and state level, it maintained.

In the case of Peer Mediation, another functioning body of the movement, peers, youth and women groups, come together and discuss issues that are affecting them and find solutions by following certain programmes and processes prescribed by the movement. The purpose of peer mediation is to enhance and promote healthy communication and to reduce violence and practice a healthy discussion platform to eliminate all forms of violent conflicts in the organizations, communities and villages respectively, the report said.

The training concluded with an evaluation and action plan to train church leaders, women and youth leaders to form themselves into peace clubs, peer mediation and peace forums. The movement is actively involved in training the teachers to train as peace builders and promoters of peace education, it added.
