Dimapur: In pursuance of reaching a cordial and mutual decision to the vexed Nagaland-Assam border dispute, a Peace Committee was formed for issues pertaining to the border dispute. Officials representing both sides held parleys at the Numaligarh Refinery limited in Assam today. Commissioner of Border Affairs TN Mannen, while speaking over telephone said, “People should not suffer because of differences arising between governments.” The consultations were primarily held to develop goodwill, he said. Mannen said that the problem of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants was also dwelt upon. He further said that the Peace Committee could look into small issues at the local level. Assam has been striving to solve the border dispute through the intervention of the Supreme Court while Nagaland is aiming to resolve the issue bilaterally through mutual understanding based on ground realities.
It may be mentioned that a smaller level committee representing people from both the States was recently formed along the Mokokchung side of the Assam border. Several months back under the initiative of the Lotha Hoho, a people to people platform was also set up in Wokha district. Friday’s bilateral meeting is the latest in a series of high level discussion taking place to resolve the boundary dispute between the two States.
