Peren CSOs take steps to stop ‘rampant deforestation’

Totally prohibits passage of round timber from Peren district with immediate effect

Peren, September 29 (MExN): Peren civil society organisations (CSOs) have unanimously resolved to “totally prohibit the passage of round timber from Peren district except the sawn timber with immediate effect from this season onwards.”

The resolution, adopted at the emergency consultative meeting of CSOs on September 21, was made to “stop rampant deforestation and exploitation of natural resources in the district,” informed a joint statement issued by the Zeliangrong Baudi, Nagaland Zeliang People Organization (NZPO) and Zeme Council (ZC), and Liangmai Council Nagaland. The statement was appended by NZPO President Kevipele Iheilung and ZC President Dr Tumda Newme.

According to the joint statement, the CSOs at the meeting also resolved to entrust students’ organisations of the district to “impose the decision and defaulters will be penalised as decided.”

“The concerned Timber/Log contractors are informed through the media to abide by the decision taken to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings in future in the interest of the public,” it added.

Providing insight on how the resolution came about, the statement maintained that rampant logging of timber in Peren district and its adjoining areas, over the span of many decades, have destroyed the ecological balance and are contributing in the process of climate change in the larger picture.

In order to stop further destruction to forest and ensure that the economic activities are carried out in controlled manner, the Zeliangrong Baudi (N) proposed and pursued the setting up of industrial zone in Jalukie, it informed.

While the proposal was approved in District Planning & Development Board (DPDB) meeting in 2017, the matter put up to the concerned authority was delayed inordinately, it claimed.

In this connection, the CSOs of the Peren district decided to have the emergency consultative meeting and unanimously made the decisions, it added.
