Personal guard of Manipur BJP president critically injured in altercation

A rifleman deployed as personal-cum-house guard of the Manipur unit BJP President sustained critical injuries after one of his colleagues allegedly shot him with his service rifle on Friday. The incident took place at the residence of the state BJP president A Sarda Devi at Brahmapur Aribam Leikai under Porompat police station of Imphal East district on Friday morning.

Sarda Devi was not at her residence when the incident took place as she is currently in New Delhi. She left Imphal on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the critically injured personnel was identified as A Bimol Sharma of Naharup in Imphal East, a rifleman of 7th Manipur Rifles. He has been shifted to a private hospital in Imphal from JNIMS hospital where he was rushed with bullet injuries. His condition was stated to be critical.

He was allegedly shot at by Rifleman Thonginthang Baite with his service rifle following a brawl, sources said.  Baite was arrested by a team of Porompat police station who rushed to the spot immediately after the incident. A case was also registered in connection with the incident.

Sources said that a total of 16 personnel of the 7th Manipur Rifles are deployed as personal-cum-house guards of the Manipur BJP president. As many as 13 of them were stationed at the house at the time of the incident and some of them were picked up by police for recording their statements regarding the incident, sources said.
