Phek farmers introduced to strawberry crop cultivation

Dimapur, April 27 (MExN): A farmers’ exposure tour to Mokokchung district was organised and sponsored by ATMA-Phek from April 22 to 25. A team of 17 farmers comprising of farmer’s friends, best farmer awardees and women SHG members was led by Dr. Moa Walling, DHO &PDATMA, Phek and four ATMA officials. 

The team visited strawberry gardens, Rose poly-house/cultivation unit, KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) and SARS (State Agricultural Research Station) at Yisemyong village; Mopungchuket and Impur villages, Tea garden at Chuchuyimpang village and Mokokchung town.

“One of the most notable aspects of the exposure tour was the introduction of the touring Phek farmers to the strawberry crop as well as its cultivation practices. As such, Strawberry suckers were distributed to them to help them introduce and propagate the (new) high value crop in Phek district,” Dr. Moa Walling, DHO &PDATMA, Phek stated in a press release. 

All the visits were marked by on-farm interactions with the concerned officials and farmers/entrepreneurs, who gave the touring team detailed information about their respective areas of work as well as shared success stories and technologies that, may be compatible for application in Phek district.

Besides, a recreational trip to Mopungchuket and Impur villages was also undertaken to visit some popular landmarks like the Etiben Memorial Tower and Impur Centennial Memorial Hall. Last, but not the least, the team toured Mokokchung town to survey the local markets, important landmarks and the town in general.
