Phek, October 10 (MExN): Phek District observed World Mental Health Day under the theme ‘Suicide Prevention’ at Phek District hospital conference hall with Chotisu Sazo, Member of Legislative Assembly as the special guest on October 10. 


Sazo in his exhortation urged the gathering to take a prompt action when they come across any mentally distressed or mentally ill person. He said it is our responsibility to give awareness on the prevention of suicidal problems. “A gentle character can heal a patient and a gentle personality of a nurse or doctor is more important than treatment,” he said while speaking on the importance of proper counselling and treatment of mental illness.


Dr. Senilo Magh, Nodal Officer, District Mental Health Program emphasizing that prevention is the most important step to curb suicide, elaborated on what every individual can do. He said that identifying warning signs like mood swings, reckless behaviour, use of substances, threats about killing oneself, etc. needs to be identified immediately and takes seriously. “Next step being to talk with the individual genuinely with love and care, helping the person to ventilate,” he added. He also stated that one should always seek for professional help when required. Stressing on the importance of knowing the meaning and purpose of one’s life,he urged to church leaders to play their part and fill the gap. 


Welcome address was delivered by Dr. Wethselo Tsuhah. A short video on the importance of counselling was also shown. The programme was attended by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vibeituonuo Mepfuo, District Program Officers, Doctors, Nurses, students and teachers of CHSS and GHSS Phek, Community leaders, staffs of CMO & DH.


Phek District also launched Mental Health Program at District hospital Phek on October 9. The program was launched by Dr. Neikhrielie Khimiao, Addl. Director, Addl. MD, NHM and a short speech was given Dr. Keneiteiso Sorhie State Program Officer, National Mental Health Program.
