Dimapur Phom Students’ Union (DPSU) celebrated its silver jubilee with the theme ‘Celebrating Unity’ here at Town Hall on Saturday with S. Pangnyu Phom, MLA, as chief guest and editor-in-chief, Nagaland Post, Geoffrey Yaden, as guest of honour.

The chief guest in his address said as per media reports, Longleng district has been declared as the safest place in Nagaland and according to the testimonies of other Naga tribes, Phoms are considered to be one of the most peace loving communities.

Pangnyu exhorted the Phom students to live up to the expectations of the other tribes and communities through their dealings, behaviour and by leading exemplary lives.

While congratulating DPSU on the occasion of the silver jubilee, the former RD minister at the same time reminded that any jubilee celebration should be done with a purpose in the form of adopting resolutions for the benefit of posterity.

He said jubilee is not only a time for celebration, but more importantly, a time for retrospection – a time to recall the past achievements and deeds, a time to assess the works at hand and a time to ponder and decide on the future course of actions.

Pangnyu called on the student community to be humble in their daily activities in pursuit of success and also to be determined if they aspire to achieve success and recognition.

Geoffrey Yaden, in his address said while celebration of silver jubilee is a ‘milestone’, yet one can sit and do little and at the same time achieve 50 years. Yaden said the follow-up of jubilee celebrations should be accompanied by vibrant movement and activities.

Outlining the contrast of the past and present-day Nagaland, Yaden said Nagas in the past were the envy of other people as they were recognized for their integrity, work culture and honesty. The veteran editor also said Naga political leaders in the past were also equally acknowledged for their wisdom, acumen and the unquestionable zeal to serve their people.

He said in the present too, Nagas have far-sighted political leaders eager to serve the people but in most instances, the public are not giving these leaders a chance as the leaders are bogged down by public demand for money and other favours.

Yaden further said in the past, Nagas were not dependent on outsiders but inter-dependent on each other for their survival. He exhorted the students that the key to Naga future lies on the students to learn how to be ‘independent’ or inter-dependent on fellow Nagas.

NT Thamlong, the first general secretary of DPSU (1991 tenure), exhorted the student community to remove the backward tag and said combined effort is needed to move forward.

Short speeches were delivered by D. Hongkam, president, Phom Students Conference; A Pongshi, president, Dimapur Phom Union; and Stephen Chang, president, Dimapur Eastern Naga Students’ Union.
