The Phom community in Kohima under the aegis of Phom Union Kohima (PUK) observed 72nd Phom Day at Kohima Phom Baptist Church (KPBC) on June 6.
June 6 is observed as Phom Day every year by Phom Nagas in remembrance of June 6, 1952 when the elders of the Phom tribe made a pledge to stop the practice of head hunting and to live in peace with one another. In 1952, a stone pillar was erected having imprinted a vow in a monument which reads “June 6 1952, Phom Day to witness this day wherein all Phoms have pledge themselves to be peaceful and loyal to government.
The significance of Phom Day was highlighted by S Yongchang, Additional Director, Department of Agriculture, Nagaland.
The programme was chaired by PUK vice president E Thiba while welcome address was delivered by PUK president Imti Makholee Phom. L. Heong recited Phom Day poem while special song was presented by Phomla Hoichem Kohima unit.
KPBC associate pastor (Women) Chumei H pronounced Bible reading.
Rev. Phomlee Van, pastor KPBC pronounced act of blessings for Phom community. Manlam M. Chungpang scored pianist for the programme.
