Phek, February 20 (MExN): A programme on the revision of the piggery model was held at Thetsumi village under Phek district on February 19. It was organised by Thetsumi Village Council under its Chairman Vetshe Tsuzuh along with Village Development Board (VDB) Secretary Mesevekha Doulo and their team.
The Revised Piggery Model was introduced to support local pig farmers following the outbreak of African Swine Fever in 2024, which resulted in the loss of all pigs in the village. This model includes key guidelines such as maintaining proper pig sties, banning the import of pigs from outside the village, and ensuring that piglets are sourced locally to prevent disease outbreaks.
Thetsumi Village, located in Phek district, was the “first among the Chakhesang community to enforce a ban on pig imports as a preventive measure against livestock diseases.”
The piggery model was initially implemented in 1998 under the chairmanship of the late Mesechulo Lasuh (former Village Council Chairman). It took approximately seven to eight years to fully implement structured pig rearing in sties, a practice that continues to this day, stated an update received here.
Earlier, the event commenced with prayer by Associate Pastor Lhouvezulo Nuh of Thetsumi Baptist Church (TBC), followed by a welcome address from Mesevekha Doulo. He emphasised the significance of piggery for the village and provided insights into best practices for pig rearing. Pastor Lhoukhrope Tsuzuh of Thetsumi Baptist Church offered dedicatory prayer. The programme concluded with the distribution of free piglets to beneficiaries.
