Plastic waste rule imposed in Kohima

Kohima, May 3 (MExN): In continuation to an official notification dated March 16, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) has reminded the public and business establishments within its jurisdiction that the Plastic Waste (Management & Handling), Rule 2011, as notified by the Ministry of Environment & Forest (MoEF), Government of India under the Environment (protection) Act, 1986 has been strictly enforced in Kohima from May 1. 

KMC chief executive officer (CEO) Elizabeth Ngully in the press release informed that the thickness of the plastic carry bags of virgin or recyclable or compostable plastics should not be less than 40 microns in thickness. Use of plastic materials in sachets for storing, packing or selling gutka and tobacco and pan masala has been banned. Each plastic carry bag and multi-layered packing shall have the name, registration number of the manufacturer and thickness in case of carry bag. No carry bag shall be made available free of cost by retailers to consumers. Any shops found selling; using polythene or plastic bags below 40 micros will be panelized as per the law, it said.
