PM Modi arrives in Guwahati amidst bandh call

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati at around 5: 30 pm on Friday amidst stiff opposition to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.


Massive protest against CAB erupted in Guwahati immediately after PM Modi landed in Guwahati airport. The Kamrup (metro) district administration clamped Section 144 of CrPC in few localities of the city where PM Modi’s convoy was expected to him from the airport to Raj Bhavan. The PM is on a two day tour of the NE and will be staying at the Raj Bhavan for the night.


Modi's is on a two-day visit to three northeastern states - Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.


On Saturday he will first fly to Arunachal Pradesh then come back to Guwahati from where he will fly to Tripura.


A massive build up of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) members were also reported at its office which is situated close to Raj Bhavan. Hundreds of AASU activist were seen carrying black flags which they intended to wave at Modi when he passes by.


AGP also took out a torch rally in protest however the police restrained their movement. The peasant group, KMSS has called every citizen to hoist black flags atop their homes when PM addresses a rally on the outskirt of the city.


When PM Modi addresses public rallies in Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday to inaugurate different developmental programmes, he will also be facing an Assam bandh called by the Tai Ahom Youth Parishad, Assam (TAYPA), a youth organisation of Tai Ahom communities that has a strong influence in Tai Ahom dominated districts of eastern Assam.


According to IANS news agency, the bandh is also supported by two prominent organisations - the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP).


AASU has also decided to oppose Modi's visit on Saturday, it said, adding its members will stage protests in all districts and sub-divisional headquarters while the PM addresses a public rally. The AASU agitation is also supported by North East Students' Organisation (NESO) and 70 other tribal organisations in the state.
