PM Shri GHS Yangphi celebrates cultural day with traditional fervour

KIPHIRE, MAY 1 (MExN): PM Shri Government High School, Yangphi, Kiphire celebrated its Cultural Day with enthusiasm and vibrancy on April 30 at Hopongkyu Memorial Hall. The event was attended by members of the School Management and Development Committee (SMDC), teachers, and students.

According to a DIPR report, the programme was chaired by Y. Mhono, Graduate Teacher. T. Chohose Sangtam led the invocation prayer, followed by a keynote address by Assistant Headmaster Lipiri Sangtam, who welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage through such events.

A variety of cultural presentations showcased the rich traditions of the region. Students performed folk songs representing various tribes, including Sangtam, Sumi, Yimkhiung, and Tikhir. Individual events such as war cries, bamboo gun firing (locally known as phoh-phoh-u in Sangtam), five stones, and a rice winnowing competition were also held, with enthusiastic participation from the students.

The Tikhir tribe emerged as the winner in the group folk song category, followed by the Yimkhiung tribe in second place.

In her exhortation, SMDC member Lutoli encouraged students to strive for academic excellence and announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for any student who secures the first position in the HSLC Exam 2026.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Lichumse Sangtam and Project Assistant Cholimong from the District Mission Authority also paid a courtesy visit during the celebration.The vote of thanks was delivered by Lipiri Sangtam, Assistant Headmaster. The programme concluded with a thanksgiving prayer by Mughasheli.
