Pochury organizations allege villagers are being threatened

Phek, February 18 (MExN): Appealing for the ‘citizens of Pochury’ to abide by the election ‘model code of conduct’ and the NBCC campaign for ‘clean election’, a group of four Pochury front organizations, in a press release, condemned the “alleged involvement” of NSCN (IM) functionaries in the ensuing State election in 20 Meluri Assembly Constituency (A/C). These include the Pochury Students’ Union (PSU), Pochury Mother’s Association (PMA), Pochury Gaon Bura’s Union (PGBU) and Pochury Public forum (PPF).

“The NSCN (IM) arm cadre were arresting village leaders and threatening them to support a particular candidate. It is also alleged that the NSCN (IM) functionaries were forcefully convening meeting from village to village to support particular candidate with dire consequences that a heavy fine amounting to Rs. 1,00,000 (one lakh) shall be imposed from any voter who voted against their direction,” stated the press release signed by Abel Sor Thuer, President of PSU, Machü, President of PMA, Nyupuchu, President of PGBU and Gnachu Trakha, President of PPF.

Expressing their displeasure, the four organizations have asked all intending candidates of 20 Meluri A/C “not to approach or use the national workers as tool for promoting their selfish agenda”. The contenders for this constituency are ruling MLA Yitachu on an NPF ticket, Khuosatho on an INC ticket and S. Akho Leyri as an independent.

Stating that the people of Pochury need ‘determined, efficient and visionary leaders’, the frontal organizations also asserted that they are not in favour of any political party or candidate. The organizations have directed the people of Pochury to “cast their vote as per the fundamental right of the people with their free consent” and to “not be victims of any threat or influence”.
