Dimapur, March 30 (MExN): The Pochury community deserves a separate Assembly Constituency for the fact that they are a distinct identity and is able to achieve the hopes and aspirations of its people, the Pochury Public Forum states.
The forum in a release issued by its president Penthu Pochury stated that the Pochury community has been recognized by the Government of Nagaland. “…the cherished desire of the people of the tribe is to have a separate constituency in order to protect the distinct tribal identity because of their sentimental attachment to it” the forum stated. It reminded that no tribe is willing to be an appendage in the constituency of another tribe but wish to be readjusted with distinct tribal composition. “…for democracy is hollow without proper representation in the legislative assembly” it stated.
However this demand for a separate constituency should not be misconstrued otherwise, the forum pointed out. “..which is our democratic right should not be construed or have misconception that such demand is based on tribalism feeling or parochialism or selfish motive” the forum stated while reminding that the constitution of India is vast enough to provide “immense scope” within its democratic principles to accommodate the hopes and aspiration of any section of the people.
“Although the population of Pochury tribe fall short by 8262 of the minimum accepted range of district (Phek average, it is almost reaching the district average of Zunheboto which is 21553 with minimum acceptance range of 19398” the forum stated. In view of this the organization urged the delimitation Commission to look into the issue seriously and recommend the case of the Pochury community for a separate constituency.
