The police have advised restraint, while requesting the public to refrain from circulating unverified social media posts that could result in untoward incidents. The advisory comes in the backdrop of unverified reports about supposed kidnappers on the prowl, fanning public apprehension.
In one such incident on September 27, four persons were apprehended on suspicion by villagers before they were taken into safe custody by the police. The incident, video clippings of which were widely circulated on social media, happened at Khushiabill, Dimapur.
According to the Dimapur police, the four persons were suspected of being child kidnappers. The villagers reportedly got suspicious seeing a group of unknown persons turning up at the village in a car, selling cosmetic products.
Dimapur police PRO, DCP (Crime), Bharat Laxman Mankad told The Morung Express that they were rounded up by the villagers at around 5:10 pm. As per the preliminary police inquiry, they were reportedly seen talking to a child, alarming the villagers, who subsequently apprehended them. It was about an hour before the police took them into custody. In the car was found cosmetic products, which the four persons claimed they were selling.
While the suspicion and the resultant charge of kidnapping remained incidental, the PRO said that that the police are trying to verify the cosmetics sale angle. He said, “The police are investigating whether the cosmetics were adulterated or counterfeit of branded products.”
