Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is a method of providing feedback to voters using a ballotless voting system.

A VVPAT is intended as an independent verification system for voting machines designed to allow voters to verify that their vote was cast correctly, to detect possible election fraud or malfunction, and to provide a means to audit the stored electronic results.

It contains the name of the candidate (for whom vote has been cast) and symbol of the party/individual candidate.

A VVPAT allows voters the possibility to verify that their votes are cast as intended and can serve as an additional barrier to changing or destroying votes. The VVPAT includes a direct recording electronic voting system (DRE), to assure voters that their votes have been recorded as intended.
According to CEO Nagaland, VVPAT is further going to increase transparency and reliability in poll process. VVPAT will be used in all the polling stations in all the elections. VVPAT will be kept in voting compartment along with ballot unit. VVPAT has a small transparent window behind which a printed paper slip will appear when the ballot unit is pressed. The printed paper slip will display the name, serial number and election symbol of the candidate for seven seconds to the voter. After seven second the printed paper slip will automatically get cut and drop in the sealed box below.
