AKM imposes ‘indefinite shutdown’ on a major internet service provider

Poor internet service continues to induce ire among the public of Mokokchung with Ao Students’ Conference taking the lead in demanding for restoration of stable internet service and connectivity.

Many internet consumers, mostly parents of school students whose children are attending online classes after the schools were closed after the lockdown, have lodged their complaints against internet service providers in Mokokchung to the Ao Students’ Conference or Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM), the apex students’ organization of the Ao Naga community.

Consequently, on July 28, the AKM imposed an “indefinite shutdown” on a major internet service provider in Mokokchung after it found the reasons cited by the company unsatisfactory. It may be recalled that AKM had on July 4 shut down the offices of Reliance Jio and Vodafone offices in Mokokchung for not improving their internet services after repeated appeals. While Vodafone is reported to have complied to the AKM’s demands after its office was sealed by AKM, Reliance Jio failed to.

AKM vice president and chairman of the AKM Public Grievances Cell, Yimjungsunep said that the all the offices and assets of Reliance Jio telecom service provider including the “parent tower” of the company have been shut down and that the latter is required to “assure stable, consistent and uninterrupted service to its consumers.”

The company through its Center Manager, Dimapur has also written to AKM on July 29 citing their grievances and offering their assurance for proper network connectivity in Mokokchung. It was stated that the “blackouts” was due to “fibre cuts” in Mokokchung-Changtongya route, Wokha-Mokokchung route and Wokha-Botsa route. It was also stated that there were “intentional cuts” for which FIRs have been lodged. The letter also informed that a new fibre route along Mokokchung-Mariani road was in progress which is expected to be completed by end of August 2020. The letter assured that the blackouts in Mokokchung would be resolved by August 31, 2020.

Two junior representatives of Reliance Jio met the AKM leaders today to hammer out a solution but the meeting ended in a stalemate. AKM leader Yimjungsunep said that the two junior representatives who met them today were not in a position to own the company’s responsibilities nor append their signatures on any memorandum with AKM on behalf of the company. AKM has meanwhile appealed to the citizens for their cooperation and support “till the issue is resolved.”
