MLA Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu requested the state government to grant compensation to the families of those who died due to the novel coronavirus in Nagaland.

Stating that there are nearly 500 deaths due to COVID, he requested the state government to have at least some humanity and sympathy to the families of those who died of COVID.

Azo made this plea during the discussion on matters of urgent public importance on ‘Post COVID Economic Recovery’ at the recently concluded 8th session of 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

Creation of COVID department
Azo suggested the government to try to bring out COVID department of its own in the state.

He urged upon the state government to set a huge amount towards agri and allied sectors in the state.

Also suggesting creating a separate cell for COVID to tackle the pandemic, he also stressed on the need to educate the community at the grassroots level.

He requested the government to set some funds to create awareness programme to educate the people on COVID safety protocols.

More important to save lives
While acknowledging that the economy is important, Azo stated that saving lives take precedence. What is the use of economy when there would be no population to enjoy it,” he added.

In this, he stressed on the need to create the best atmosphere out of the worst situation.

Today, when you want to talk about the economy, it all about self sufficiency, self dependent and working on self reliance, he said.

Azo said that before COVID situation, he had no idea about rearing pig, setting up fishery pond and poultry farms. “But this COVID situation taught me so much that I cannot depend on others,” he said adding that today, he owned nearly 20 to 30 pigs, two fishery ponds and nearly 100 chickens in his farm.

Health facilities improved
Azo said the health infrastructure/ health facilities were never up to mark before but with COVID, the health facilities have improved to a great extent.

He said the oxygen generation plant has been installed in almost all the district including critical care units in almost all the district hospitals.

“Prior to that, ICU was only known in Kohima and Dimapur but today, we have ICU in Phek, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Mon, everywhere,” he said.

We must also realize that COVID is here to stay, for which people must learn how to live with others and adjust with others.

Meanwhile, Azo extended fullest appreciation to the state government, health and family welfare department, frontline workers, NGOs, FBOs for their tireless efforts to save lives during the pandemic.
