KOHIMA: The press fraternity here today staged a protest rally at the MLA Hostel Junction and registered strong condemnation over the shooting of Xavier Rütsa, Correspondent Nagaland Post on Thursday at around 9:00 PM here. “Media under attack?” “Down with guns/ stop violence,” “ We condemn guns without sense,” “ Kill gun culture,” “ Stop attack on media,” “ Save the media,” “Stop the bloodshed” “ Explain this,” were some of the placards carried out in the protest.
Representative from Naga Students’ Federation, Naga Mothers Association, Royal Club, Kohima and Naga Hoho also extended their solidarity with the press fraternity in the protest rally.
Later, the Kohima Press Club convened an emergency meeting at the NSF Conference Hall, Kohima where it resolved to submit a representation to the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio. Viewing the incident with seriousness, it demanded immediate arrest of the criminals involved in the incident, bear medical expenses and necessary compensation to the victim, provide security and safety to the media in particular and the public in general and measure to stop re-occurrence of such incident.
The Press Corps of Nagaland in its meeting at Hotel Japfu also resolved to come up with a strong public statement as well as to pressurize the state government to speed up the investigation.
Meanwhile, Kohima SP informed that no arrest has been made so far and investigation is still going on.
