Dimapur, November 6 (MExN): Students in Dimapur are being overcharged for private tuition, according to the Western Sumi Students' Union (WSSU) who claimed to have received several complaints from distraught parents and students.
The union, on Saturday, issued a press release stating that several private tutors, especially those giving home tuitions, have been “taking undue advantage” of the pandemic situation and charging exorbitant tuition fees.
Schools and colleges have been communicating and conducting classes with students through virtual lectures, open online classes, and courses during the pandemic, but many institutions were not able to achieve the desired levels of performances. And while the recent government notification allowed schools and colleges to start offline classes using an alternate roster system, it said that at this point of time, many parents “are compelled to give their children private tuitions and are struggling to find best tutor available for private tuitions, ready to sacrifice any amount of fees charged by the tutor.”
“Knowing the predicament of both the students and the parents, tutors in Dimapur are taking undue advantage by charging exorbitant tuition fees,” it underscored, adding that parents who are struggling to pay school fees, are being forced to pay higher fee for tuitions, especially home tuitions.
With tuition fees becoming inseparable part of education system today, the union also drew attention to the lack of a proper mechanism to keep a check on such kinds of “daylight robbery,” and said that parents are often compelled to give in to the demands of the tutors.
“While schools and colleges have reduced their fees during pandemic, private tutors get what they demand since there are no rules for fixing their fees,” it maintained.
As such, the WSSU issued a “stern warning” against private tutors who charge exorbitant tuition fees and cautioned them to charge as per service provided and not more than that. “Failing to do so, the Union would be compelled to take further necessary course of action for the welfare of the student community,” it asserted.
It also requested parents and students to come forward and report such instances to its office by contacting the following numbers: +916009131439 and +918974469623.
