DIMAPUR, SEPT 12 (MExN): Excepting the government, all other vehicle owners or users have been told to insure their vehicles against third party liability risk, as is required under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. “Police and Enforcement personnel of the Motor Vehicles Department shall regularly conduct checks to ensure strict compliance of the provisions of the provision of the Act,” Additional Transport Commissioner T Meren Paul today said in a release.
Insurance of motor vehicles against third party liability risk is mandatory under Sec 146 of the MV Act, 1988 and violation of this provision constitutes an offence, liable for punishment under Sec 196 of the said Act, with imprisonment which may extend to 3 months or with fine which may extend to Rs 1000 or with both.
The compulsory insurance against the third party risk is in the interest of the vehicle owner and the pedestrian or any third party as in the case of injury or death arising out of the use of the vehicle, the insurance company is liable to pay compensation to the victim.
The general Insurance Company and its subsidiary companies are nationalized and the authorized insurers for issue of insurance policies to cover limited liabilities, Paul informed.
At Dimapur, the public can approach the New India Assurance Co. Ltd at Circular Road, the Oriental Insurance Co. Ltd. at Church Road, the National Insurance Co. Ltd at Dhobinala or the United India Assurance Co Ltd at Church Road. In Kohima, one can obtain the required insurance policy from the oriental Insurance Co Ltd.
