Prohibitory orders partially relaxed in Dimapur district

Dimapur, June 26 (MExN): The Commissioner of Police, Dimapur has announced a partial relaxation of prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC to ensure the safe conduct of the Urban Local Body (ULB) Election 2024. This decision follows the conclusion of the polling process in the jurisdictions of Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC), Chumoukedima Town Council (CTC), Medziphema Town Council (MTC), and Niuland Town Council (NTC).

In an official order dated June 26, Commissioner of Police Kevithuto Sophie, IPS, indicated that while the law and order situation is currently normal, it remains fragile with the potential for post-poll violence. Consequently, the prohibitory order is partially relaxed from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on June 27. However, it will be reimposed from 5:00 PM on June 27 until 7:00 AM on June 28.

During the enforcement period, several restrictions will apply within the jurisdictions of DMC, EDTC, CTC, MTC, and NTC. Public assembly of five or more people will be prohibited, as will public meetings, processions, or unlawful assemblies related to the election. Additionally, the carrying of lethal weapons and firearms, including lathis, machetes, daggers, sticks, spears, swords, and catapults, will be banned. There will also be a prohibition on carrying inflammable objects that could endanger public life and property, and the use of PA systems in public places to prevent public annoyance or disturbance will be restricted.

Violators of these prohibitions will face punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant acts and regulations. The Commissioner of Police also emphasized the necessity of these measures to maintain public peace and order during the critical post-poll period.
