In a first in the district, Mokokchung Police launched a creative initiative today dubbed “Project Amalitep” with a multi-pronged set of objectives focused on improving “traffic behavior” in the state’s third major urban center, Mokokchung town. “Amalitep” is an Ao Naga word that can be loosely translated as “cooperation” and this particular word was chosen as the project envisions building cooperation and mutual ties between authorities and stake holders. According to the SDPO and PRO of Mokokchung Police, Dinesh Gupta, the project was named “Amalitep” as this project is for the wellbeing of the society and because “public are equal stakeholders in this project.”
This project is being undertaken by Mokokchung Police in association with the Ao Kaketshir Mungdang. As part of the project, 10 volunteers will assist the Mokokchung Traffic Police to ensure smooth regulation of traffic in Mokokchung town after undergoing an orientation session. The volunteers will be engaged for a week after the completion of which a certificate will be awarded to them. The first patch of volunteers joined the project today comprising of 5 from Mokokchung village and 5 from Ungma village. The first patch of the volunteers was introduced to the workings and structure of the police department as well as relevant rules and sections of law pertaining to traffic and motor vehicles. They were also introduced to the tasks they would be performing in the course of the week. The main tasks for the volunteers would be to ensure proper parking of vehicles and safety for pedestrians, to spread awareness on traffic rules and regulations, create awareness of using indicators and signal lights by driers and to coordinate with the traffic police. The police have identified 4 main traffic points in the town and the volunteers will be assisting the traffic police in the stretch between P-Point and R-Point, which is along IM Road between Police Point and Rotary Point.
Through this project, the police aim to give exposure to the volunteers to understand traffic rules and regulations while also gaining from the volunteers new ideas and suggestions. The volunteers will also reinforce the much needed manpower to regulate the traffic in Mokokchung town. Through this project, it is also expected that the “society and police would come closer and lessen the general mistrust between public and police apart from spreading good traffic behavior.”
It may be noted that the Mokokchung Traffic Police functions under a mere Officer In-Charge in the rank of a Sub-Inspector with only 38 traffic police constables for the whole district of Mokokchung district and without a Traffic Police Station. The project launched today was a follow-up action of the consultative and interactive meeting between the police and citizens of Mokokchung town on April 26 last as part of the 29th National Road Safety Week 2018.
During the orientation session for the volunteers, Mokokchung Police Women Cell in-charge Achila Pongen highlighted the working system and structure of the police in Nagaland while OC Traffic, SI Talimayang Jamir introduced them to the traffic rules and regulations. The project was launched in the presence of Additional SP Mokokchung, Relo Aye.
Meanwhile, PRO Mokokchung Police informed that interested persons willing to volunteer under “Project Amalitep” can contact him at the number 8837226606 or the AKM officers.
