Book on effectiveness of DIET in Nagaland released

The Nagaland State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT) Director, Chumchanbeni Kikon on Thursday said that there is a proposal for setting up more District Institutes of Education & Training (DIET) in the state.
Releasing the book titled ‘Effectiveness of District Institutes of Education & Training (DIET) in Nagaland’ written by Dr Imkongsenla Longchar, Kikon said that at present, 8 DIETs are functioning in 8 districts of Nagaland giving D.El.Ed Course for pre-service teachers. “In addition to these 8 DIETs, there is also a proposal for setting up more DIETs in the state,” she said during the function held at the State Institute of Educational Management & Training (SIEMAT) Hall, Kohima on February 17.
D.El.Ed certificate has become one of the minimum eligibility criteria to be eligible for Primary and Elementary teachers according to RTE Act 2009 and also the National Education Policy 2020.
Kikon maintained that various programmes and activities are conducted in DIETs to bring a change in the education system by imparting quality training to teachers alongside the New Pedagogy and policies under the guidelines of the NCTE. In addition, DIETs also established close linkages with various organizations and Institutions at the National State, Divisional and District levels whose objectives and interests converge with its own.
She said that with the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020, the DIETs have a great role to play in strengthening the quality of teacher education and needs to be revitalized for professional development of teachers.
Kikon said the DIET were envisioned in the National Policy of Education, 1986, and were created by the Government of India to strengthen elementary education and support the decentralization of education to the district level. DIETs which have been established with a Mission of “Providing academic and resource support at the grass-roots level for the success of the various strategies and programmes being undertaken in the areas of elementary and adult education, she said adding that DIET have 3 major functions - training (both of pre service and in-service), resource support (extension/guidance, development of materials, aids, evaluation tools, etc) and action research.
On the book, Kikon strongly believed that it would be a great resource book and helpful to all, especially to SCERT and elementary teachers in the state. “This will guide and help us to participate in the various challenges and issues that we need to overcome especially at the elementary level,” she said.
The author said that this book is an extension of her Ph.D research work under the department of education, Nagaland University. She dedicated this book, especially to all the school teachers in the state. Dr Longchar, MA, B.Ed, Ph.D in education is presently serving as Assistant Professor in the Department of School Education, St. Joseph University, Dimapur. Previously, she served for four years in Modern Institute of Teacher Education, Kohima as Assistant Professor in foundation course.
In a book review, Dr Zavise Rume, Professor, SCERT Nagaland asked all to go through the book which explained the concept of DIET, which was conceptualized to improve the quality of teacher education.
He said the book also talked on brief history of the origin of modern education in Nagaland, history of elementary teacher education in Nagaland, historical background of school education in Nagaland etc.
Dr Hitoca, publisher and editor-in- chief, Dimapur Publishing Company (DPC) also spoke at the programme. It was chaired by Dr Daili Kholia.
