A sit-in-protest wagainst the shooting of a youth in Imphal on Sunday demanded capital punishment for the murder accused.

In the incident on Saturday, 71-year-old Gurumayum Birachandra Sharma alias Molecule allegedly shot his nephew G Suraj Sharma (35) with his license gun on Saturday, around 9.30 am. The accused is at large as he escaped on a registered ambulance vehicle soon after he shot at his nephew. The youth succumbed to the injuries.

In protest against the incident, residents of Singjamei Ngakraba Leirak, where both the deceased and accused hail from, held a sit-in-protest demanding immediate arrest of the accused. They further demanded capital punishment to the "killer", while alleging that he intentionally committed the heinous crime. 

The protest was staged under the aegis of a local joint action committee (JAC) formed in connection with the incident.
Pressing the police to arrest the accused, the family backed by the JAC, is yet to accept the lifeless body of Suraj lying at RIMS morgue. The JAC announced that the body will not be taken back unless the accused is arrested.

Talking to reporters, JAC advisor Sanoujam Sharat accused Birachandra of attempting the life of Suraj on many occasions in the past, too. He also said that, not only the family of the deceased but also locals had requested the police for confiscating the license gun from Birachandra alias Molecule following his intimidations to neighbours and locals on several occasions. Sharat pointed out two cases were registered at Singjamei police station in 2013 and 2015 . The cases were related with attempt to murder, he said.
