Proxy teachers, SDEO issues at Tobu sub-division irk student body

DIMAPUR, MAY 17 (MExN): The delay in the posting of a Sub-Divisional Education Officer (SDEO) at Tobu sub-division since the last three months has drawn the ire of a student body- the Tobu Area Students’ Union (TASU).

At present, there are a total of 45 government run schools and 8 private schools functioning under Tobu SDEO. Besides setting a bad precedent among the teaching faculty, the absence of the SDEO was hampering the numerous official works related to the education sector in the sub-division, stated TASU president Sangti Konyak in a press release on Thursday.

Citing instances, it pointed out that assignment for file management of ministerial staff like AEO, SIS and JEOs are often delayed which in turn was causing immense hardships in addressing the needs of the students’ community.

With Tobu sub-division located 118 Kilometers from Mon HQ; the student body maintained that it becomes more difficult for the teacher in-charge and VECs to travel, especially during the monsoon season just for doing paper works at Mon HQ.

Also alleging that there are “junk of proxy teachers and even proxy Head Master at many schools where a person who has failed to qualify HSLC exams is recruited as teacher under Tobu sub-division,” the student body said such issues earnestly require the intervention of a higher authority such as the SDEO since the efforts from the students’ community alone cannot bring resolve.

The student body said it is ever ready to render cooperation and assistance towards the concerned department in scaling up the education system under Tobu sub-division provided that the department also understand and perform its duty for the uplift of the students’ community.

In this connection, the student body has urged the concerned department to depute a committed officer within a period of 30 days- someone who is ready to work for the backward areas and not in the likes of “Senior Head Master who is to be retired after few months or year.” In return, TASU said it will ensure that the norms and rules are strictly monitored in each school.
