Demands swift corrective measures by State Government & district administration
Longleng, June 26 (MExN): The Phom Students’ Conference (PSC) has raised serious concern over what it described as “dysfunctional” governance in Longleng district, revealing that only 4% of government offices were found to be fully staffed during its recent inspection.
In a statement, the PSC noted that many departmental offices were either locked during working hours or operating with minimal staff presence.
It further maintained that several offices showed no signs of “official activity,” and in many cases, officers-in-charge were absent without official explanation.
In this connection, the Conference stated that the disruption of basic public services due to such absenteeism is fuelling dissatisfaction among citizens and undermining development efforts in the region.
“This is not just administrative slackness, it’s a direct failure of responsibility that affects the everyday lives of the people,” PSC President C. Sham-e Phom is quoted as saying in the statement.
“We cannot afford to normalise this pattern of negligence, especially in a district that already faces multiple developmental challenges,” he added.
To this end, the Conference demanded “swift intervention” and urged the district administration and the state government to roll out immediate corrective measures.
These include active monitoring, stronger accountability systems, and strict action against repeat absentee officials, it added.
Imkongchingba Phom, PSC General Secretary and Convenor of the Inspection Committee, meanwhile, appealed to the heads of departments to maintain regular attendance, ensure transparency through proper record-keeping, and restore the timely delivery of public services.
He further reiterated the PSC’s stance on upholding public interest, stating that if no visible action is taken in the coming days, the apex district students’ body would consider democratic protest measures to demand accountability.
As per the Conference, its inspection findings have sparked widespread public discussion, with many local residents echoing the need for administrative reform in Longleng.
