After a day of public rush in markets and locality stores dealing with essential commodities and subsequent heavy traffic in Dimapur, Tuesday saw a sharp decline in people venturing out to procure essential commodities while vehicular movement was insignificant.
The reduction in public and vehicular movement was attributed to the complete closure of two major markets in town including the New Market and Super Market since many buyers confined to buying essential commodities within their colonies and wards. Some of the other smaller markets which remained open on Wednesday included Shyam Bazaar at Signal Angami junction and a daily bazaar at Chümoukedima. The two markets also witnessed systematic and well-regulated movement of public with involvement of the community, administration and police forces.
At Shyam Bazaar, volunteers issued tokens to public for entry keeping track of the number of people inside the market in order to avoid over-crowding. All other entry points to the market were sealed. On exit, the public were made to submit the tokens. Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Anoop Khinchi, IAS also visited the market to monitor the situation.
Meanwhile at Chümoukedima, volunteers intermittently allowed only 3-4 persons at a time and strictly maintained social distancing. The public were also provided hand sanitizers at the entry point. EAC Chümoukedima, T. Nakhro visited the market in the morning.
Head of Special Committee, Covid-19, Dimapur, Y. Kikheto Sema, IAS Commissioner & Secretary who visited the two markets and various other localities in town expressed satisfaction about Tuesday’s situation and lauded the public for their support and cooperation with the government. He also visited several banks and interacted with the employees and appealed them to provide proper services to the public and to regularly infuse ATM booths with cash. Kikheto said most of the banks had more employees on Tuesday comparing to other days. He said there was visible cooperation among the administration, police and civil societies and added that applying the T-3 formula of Cooperation, Coordination and Confidence would yield better results. Kikheto encouraged the community to adopt any innovative ideas within their respective jurisdictions provided they adhere to the norms, regulations and advisories issued by the government.
Special Committee Member, Liremo Lotha IG (Trg & Border) and Commissioner of Police, Rothihu Tetseo also separately visited various localities in Dimapur to take stock of the situation.
