The International Women's Day (IWD) Conclave 2020 initiated by the Nagaland State Women Commission and Nagaland College Principals Association was held today at Hotel Vivor, Kohima. Themed “generation equality through quality education”, the initiative witnessed dialogues and deliberations on the theme.

“Inner empowerment that comes through quality education can enable generation equality,” said Khrienuo Tachü, Chairperson, NSWC in her keynote address. Tachü viewed that many Naga women are empowered in a 'non-aggressive way, enabled particularly through quality education', however, inspite of the high literacy rate in Nagaland, the empowering factor is yet to come to the fore.

“So we need to retrospect as well as introspect to see the current system of education especially at the foundational level. Wholesome empowerment of women is what we are lacking in Nagaland inspite of numerous programmes of varied kinds,” said Tachü adding that the emphasis of the theme looks at quality Education as an empowering tool for complementary walk of men and women towards progressive development in Naga society.

While surveys and indexes indicate gender equality and development in Nagaland where the state is at par with other performing states, Tachü also noted, “Research findings and ground reality also reveal that the state is lagging behind in qualitative and wholesome living. It is important and so very essential that Naga men and women take a complementary walk towards empowerment of each other for a better Naga society tomorrow.”

The necessity to celebrate women’s day all over Nagaland together with men and women has become more relevant today, according to Tachü, with Naga women making their visible mark in the workforce in various fields. The collective effort of all think tanks, especially educationists, in creating a gender equal world was further emphasised with the NSCW Chairperson appealing the educators to provide quality education to Naga women and the Naga girl child on priority basis without discrimination so as to achieve culturally sensitive and equal world in Naga society.

The panelists of the conclave were Dr. Chubatola Aier, Dr. Vizovol Mekro, Dr. Visakhonü Hibo, and Thingujam Sharatchandra Singh. The panelists deliberated on the essence of quality education which empowers the all round development of student - a grave need which is yet to be fully realised in the State. “To have equity in education, schools which are manned by highly qualified teachers needs to revisit ethics, values and humanity that goes to complement educational qualification of a good teacher,” said Dr Visakhonu Hibo.

Hibo also urged the educators not to neglect the task of ushering quality education in their institutions. The failure of this task, for Hibo, is a violation of the right to education of a person, a family and a society.
