Railways replacing level crossings with ROB/RUB

Maligaon, September 20 (MExN): The Ministry of Railways proposes to replace Level crossing (LC) gates in the country with Road Over Bridges (ROB) on a cost-sharing basis with the respective State Govt if Train Vehicle Unit (TVU) of Level crossing gate is more than one lakh per day. Road under bridges (RUB) is also provided to replace the level crossing gates, wherever technically feasible.

This information was given by the Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha.

A press release from the NFR informed that the Indian Railways replaced a total of 2,834 level crossing gates by ROB/RUBs between 2015 and 2020. 

An expenditure of Rs.15,628 Crore has been incurred towards the replacement of LCs by ROB/RUBs. 

During the current year, an allocation of Rs.3,575 Crore has been made for ROB/RUBs. A total of 7,785 level crossing gates are sanctioned for replacement by ROB/RUB, which are in various stages of progress throughout Indian Railways.

In the NFR sector, during last six years, 276 Unmanned Level Crossings have been eliminated. While 417 Unmanned Level Crossings gates were converted to manned Level crossing gate during this period. During last six years, NFR also constructed 132 RUB / ROB in various states within its jurisdiction thereby enhancing the safety of train movement to a great extent.
