In an attempt to keep young minds occupied and to value and improve creative skills, the Aliba Student’s Union, Aliba village, Mokokchung, launched the “Skill Development and Training” project on June 9.

“Taking advantage of the unprecedented circumstances, children’s free time is utilized to let them get exposed to handicraft and to discover their undiscovered skills,” said Alemjungshi, President, Aliba Student’s Union.

“The project is focussed on children from class 5-10. They are tutored by a group of people which includes retired teachers, council members and farmers called ‘Patir Jupang’ which can be loosely translated as the ‘Old Men’s Corridor’. Patir Jupang encourages the younger generation to use their potentials to facilitate their path of raising economy for them which in turn will help the country,” added Alemjungshi.

Keeping in mind the tremendous potentiality of mankind, and helping the children to stay rooted to their culture and tradition, the children are taught how to weave egg baskets, fish stock baskets, fish trap baskets, crab stock baskets, rice stock baskets and many more.

Tenjennukshi, one of the students attending the project said “I learnt the art of making basket today which will be beneficial for me in future. Instead of sitting idle at home and playing mobile games, I am happy that I am learning to labour and I am hopeful that I will contribute to the society someday”.

The Aliba Student’s Union Office added that the project will help the children discover their potentials and skills which are for their lifetime benefits and it will also keeps the students  away from the obnoxious gadgets which many a times hampers and acts as a barrier to communication and language abilities. It will also increase creative skills, sharpen math skills and reduce stress along with many other advantages.

Repanglangba, a member of the Patir Japang said that such projects should be organised from time to time in order to know and understand each other better, value hard work and also for a person to be a resource for the society.

Apart from the Skill Development and Training project, the Aliba Student’s Union have been helping the student community in the village by printing their study materials free of charge. “Ever since the nationwide lockdown, students have been facing major problem especially with regard to printing their study materials shared by teachers online and through WhatsApp. So, we intervened and took the opportunity in collecting and printing the notes at our office free of charge,” said the President.

The Aliba Student’s Union said that this is the least the union can do for the student community and hoped that any other student union can also do the same.
