Teacher on poll duty ‘assaulted,’ ANGPTA demands action

The All Nagaland Government Primary Teachers Association (ANGPTA) has written to the District Election Officer (DEO) and the Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung demanding action against those responsible for the alleged assault and harassment of a government teacher on election duty during the recently conducted by-poll to the lone Lok Sabha seat from Nagaland.

The ANGPTA stated that the teacher, Samuel Sumi, who is also the President of the association’s Mokokchung unit, was designated for election duty at Kubza village, Polling Station 13 as First Polling Officer.

“He was harassed and assaulted and further threatened without any reason by the culprits. This kind of incident has become a menace to the smooth conduct of election,” the ANGPTA stated and cautioned that failure to deal with this incident would encourage more of such crimes in the future. The association further stated that the incident occurred “due to the lack of security arrangement for the officials deputed by the government for the same.”

It demanded that the culprits be given exemplary punishment. Failure to do so would compel the association not to comply with any further directives from the authority, it cautioned.
