Refrain from disposing plastic waste at heritage site: CVC

Council issues directives for visitors
to Old Chümoukedima heritage village

Dimapur, August 10 (MExN): The Chümoukedima Village Council (CVC) on Tuesday expressed concern at the amount of plastic waste left behind by visitors at the old Chümoukedima heritage village site and issued directives for strict compliance by visitors.

While encouraging frequent visits from trekkers and adventure loving denizens at the site, the CVC also observed that the increasing amount of non-degradable waste left by visitors at the viewpoints has become a concerning matter. In this regard, it appealed all visitors of the heritage village to refrain from disposing plastic waste at the sites randomly. Instead, it is appealed that the plastic wastes/non degradable wastes should be carried back by visitors and disposed off at available waste bins, it added.

The CVC also highlighted that monoliths erected by the church are being defaced and that “the amount of emptied liquor bottles and other materials indicating immoral activities at the heritage sites is an open insult to the ancestral home of the Chümoukedima people which will not be tolerated…”

In this regard, the CVC sternly cautioned against vandalism and defacement of monuments and public utilities.

“These appalling acts are condemned in the strongest term and any vandals or anti-social elements henceforth caught in such acts will be sternly dealt with and heavy fines will be imposed as per customary law,” it cautioned.

The CVC informed the general public that, the old Chümoukedima heritage village is a historical site holding both traditional and sentimental value to the Chümoukedima natives and that its standing resolution on complete ban of hunting and other activities that could deplete the flora and fauna under its jurisdiction encompasses the old Chümoukedima heritage village jurisdiction as well.

The standing resolution on ban of hunting, fodder collection, gathering of firewood, bamboos or other wild resources at the old village site must be strictly adhered to, the CVC stated adding that defaulters will be penalized up to Rs 1 lakh depending on the severity of the damage.
