Dimapur, August 7 (MExN): The Dimapur Bar Association (DBA) on Saturday issued a public notice advising advocates and members to refrain from indulging in inappropriate and illegal practices that could have them disbanded from the Bar.
According to a press release from the DBA President Imti Imsong and General Secretary Hukavi Zhimomi, the notice was issued after several instances of ‘inappropriate and unauthorized activities’ by Bar members were brought to light. The DBA is constrained to set the records straight and sensitize the general public in regard to some common misconceptions, it said.
In this regard, the DBA officials stated that some individuals, in the capacity of Notary Public, have been issuing marriage certificates, which is inappropriate and illegal. Marriage certificates are to be obtained from designated marriage officers and the Notaries Public have no authority or power to issue marriage certificates, it underscored.
The association also noted that some advocates/members of the Bar have been indulging in inappropriate money lending activities and real estate businesses as agents, brokers, etc. Any member of the Bar indulging in any such activities shall be doing so at their own risk and will liable to be disbanded from the Bar, it cautioned.
It also drew attention to the misuse of the advocates logo and stickers on vehicles and said that the logo and stickers are exclusively to be used by the bona fide advocates and the members of the Bar for official court duties. The DBA informed that usage of the logo and sticker on commercial vehicles, unofficial family cars, transport vehicles, etc., or for any other purpose by individuals other than bona fide advocates and members of the Bar, is illegal.
