ULFA claims encounter was fake

GUWAHATI, JANUARY 24 (UNI):
The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) today claimed that the two youths killed by the Army and police in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district yesterday were not its cadres. In a statement e-mailed to the local media, ULFA publicity wing commander "second lieutenant" Arunudoy Duhotia alleged that the youths were innocent civilians and not its cadres, as claimed by the security forces.  Two youths were gunned down by a joint team of army and police at Makum in Tinsukia yesterday following an encounter, security forces had said. The two youths were stated to be ULFA cadres and arms and ammunition were also allegedly recovered from them. The ULFA claimed that the encounter was a staged one and the weapons reportedly recovered from them were placed by the security forces themselves.  The outfit warned of violent retaliation if Assamese youths were killed in "fake encounters".
