Register vote here or leave diktat

Dimapur | October 10

An alleged ‘Register-vote-here-or-leave’ diktat to non-domicile residents, living in parts of Mokokchung town, has had the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Union Mokokchung (ENPUM) writing to the Ao Senden. The letter, dated October 4, which surfaced on social media, sought the Ao Senden’s intervention with regard to a deadline served to families hailing from Eastern Nagaland and presently living in the Mokokchung town area, to transfer votes from their place of origin to the current place of residence.

Who issued the diktat was not specified, the letter only stated that it was served “by some organisations” to transfer vote “from their original constituency to their present domicile.” It said that October 5 was the deadline to comply with the diktat, failing which they were asked to vacate their present place of residence.

The ENPUM, while expressing dismay at the alleged diktat, said that such an act would be detrimental to the “goodwill that exists among us and the Naga family in general.”  It appealed, “As such… with unwavering faith on your fair judgment, earnestly appeal your authority to kindly intervene (in) this matter promptly…”

People familiar with the issue declined to disclose the details of the “organisations,” while stating that it was a “sensitive” matter. It was however informed that the families affected by the diktat are not covered by the Mokokchung municipal area. According to a source, the diktat was issued by villages falling in two different constituencies and that the Ao Senden was in the process of handling the matter. The number of households affected by the diktat was tipped to be around 300-400.
