KOHIMA: State government employees attended the last working day of Saturdays’ for the year 2005 in their respective offices on December 17.

Meanwhile, the recent government’s declaration of all the Saturdays’ of the months as regular holiday evoked a mixture of response from the general public.

The state government has declared all the Saturday’s of the months as regular holidays which will come into effect from January 1, 2006.

Talking to The Morung Express, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) President Hokheto Sema said that instead of reducing the working days, the government should increase it.

The declaration of all Saturday’s as holiday would mean adding more holiday mood for the employees and many will take Fridays’ and Mondays’ as holiday, Hokheto said.

“It would not have a good affect rather it would have bad affect,” he added.

In its recent notification, the government also decided to strictly enforce the concept of “No work no pay” in case of erring staff.

“I am very pleased with the declaration”, said Yamhoshe, PS to Transport & Communication Minister adding that after a lot of work employees would able to relax “mentally and physically” on all Saturdays.

A local journalist Eric Miachieo too has something to comment. He wondered on what ground and wisdom the government had made such a declaration. According to him, such a step would not bring about any desirable impact, saying, the government servants were irregular in attending offices even on working days. “How can we expect good result?” he questioned.

On the other hand, in the event of the strict implementation of “No Work No Pay”, some positive changes will emerge, he continued.

A public leader Pusazo Luruo opined that the present system should be continued.

Dr. K. Hoshi said that instead of reducing working days the government should increase it as the world today was sailing through a competitive stage.

He observed that all Saturdays should be made working days and more time be provided to the employees so as to get productive result in office works.

The declaration of all Saturdays’ as holiday indicates that “the government does not have enough business,” Dr. Hoshi continued.

It may be recalled that the government has also set new schedule of working hours in the State government offices. Summer: 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (from April 1 to September 30). Winter timings will be 9:00 am to 4:00 pm (from October to March). The new schedule of working hours will come into force from January 1, 2006, it is learnt.
