Reign of regional parties have demeaned Constitutional rights of Nagas: KDCC

Kohima, February 2 (MExN): The Kohima District Congress Committee (KDCC) has stated that the attacks and counter attacks of the two regional parties – Naga People’s Front (NPF) and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) “seem to have utterly confused the general public with neither being able to bring about any conclusion.”

A press release issued by Kevi Vizo, President, KDCC stated that the reign of regional political parties in Nagaland have “demeaned the provisions of the Constitutional rights of the Naga people because NPF had ruled the state for three terms, and during their time the Acts of the Parliament including the GST had been quietly accepted without even considering that the Nagas though earlier were exempted from paying tax are now imposed with all forms of tax.”

It also stated that the then NPF government took a “wrong decision to hold ULB elections when Nagaland lost precious lives while properties worth crores were brought to ashes in 2017. “ The KDCC further observed that the NDPP has the “tag of a nationalist party, yet claims to be a regionalist has now created confusion among the people.” It also pointed that the lone MP in Lok Sabha remained silent during the passage of the CAB on January 8 and the party led PDA government had “been rejecting the peoples’ cry instead of rejecting the CAB 2016.”

The release also mentioned that it was the current Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who was then in NPF, during whose tenure as MP, the draft bill was taken up in the Parliament, to which he had “failed to protect the Nagas from the contentious bill.” It further maintained that, while Article 371(A) of the Constitution guarantees that no law of the parliament can apply to the State of Nagaland, unless so decided by the State Assembly, the “irresponsible behaviors of the regional parties in accepting the Acts” has become a grave threat for the Naga people. The KDCC asserted the Nagas “to reconsider in choosing leadership and given the opportunity Congress will be humbled in leading the State with all sincerity.”
