Yesterday evening at around 4.30 p.m. it was reported that the skeletal remains of two missing kids were found in a gorge above Viewland Colony. It is some 2 kms away from where Moheni Martin and Hriinii Hubert, both 10, studying in Class III at Don Bosco School Senapati were kidnapped on December 14 from Rikhumai Taphou, Senapati. The two kids were led away by one Manikho on that fateful day and their whereabouts remained mysterious since then. The kidnappers had taken away the ransom of Rs.15 Lakhs from the parents of the kids sometime in December last, sources said.
This morning on reaching the spot, it was seen that the decayed body of Hriinii Hubert was blocked by a tree. He had his dark green jacket, cargo pant, bluish socks and slippers on. Moheni, whose black jacket and jeans were in a tattered stage, had his head facing downward the stream.
“When the sun rays were red and about to set in, we were shooting birds in the jungle and suddenly my friend saw a piece of cloth and when we looked properly we saw the human skull and out of fright we ran for our life down the stream and later we informed other people” narrated Dovi, a young boy who with a friend first saw the dead bodies.
Early in the morning many onlookers climbed the stream to take a look at the bodies. The women present there cried out and yelled, stamping their feet on the ground, cursing the perpetrators. The Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Senapati Sub-Divisional Officer, Mao-Maram, police personnel along with media persons inspected the remains. Later, it was informed that the DGP also visited the spot.
In the afternoon the school children of all the private schools in the Senapati and Karong area converged in the ground for the condolence service organized by the All Private Schools Association, Senapati and Women’s group of Senapati and Karong area. Hundreds of school children sat under the sun holding placards reading, ‘Give Detail Report of Interrogation,’ ‘We Want Justice’, ‘Give us the Culprit,’ and shouted slogans, ‘We Want Justice.’ Around 3000 people participated in today’s rally.
Various public leaders speaking in the occasions strongly condemned the act of kidnapping the innocent school children and killing for ransom at the highest level.
Paul Leo, President, UNC, Grace Shatsang, President, NWUM, Alew Patrick, President, NPO, Adani Choro, President Memei Council, Markson, Poumai Masou Me, President Maram Naga Union and President, All Private Schools Association, Senapati spoke at the occasion. Each speaker equally stated that such dastardly act of killing innocents is against the civilized society and cannot be tolerated any longer in the society. They also urged the general public to cooperate with the authorities while trying to find out the people involved and give no shelter to such killers.
In the gathering, the Chairman of Core Committee on the Two Missing Kids read out the four points demand adopted in the urgent meeting convened by the Naga People’s Organisations and other civil societies and student bodies. The first point stated that the bodies of the two kids will not be taken without the inspection and visit of government- represented magistrate. The second demand reads: ‘Till the culprits are booked and proper justice is delivered, the burial ritual and ceremony of the two kids will not be performed.’ The third demands ex-gratia of Rs.5 Lac each for the two bereaved families of Moheni and Hubert. The fourth point demands handover of the culprits to the people for the final decision.
A rally was carried out by the women folk. The houses of two suspects, Manikho Mao at quarter colony and Brawn Tangkhul at Viewland Colony, were gutted down by an angry mob. The young budding faces of Moheni and Hubert were reduced to skeletons by the killers despite repeated appeals made by various civil societies, the parents of the kids, the rallies carried out by the School Children, series of sit-in-protests organized by women group and the bandh held by public organisations in and around the Senapati District for the safe and early release of the two missing kids.
