GHSS Thangjam observes cultural day

Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Thangjam, Tuensang organized a cultural day on September 7 with Kumar Ramnikant, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Tuensang as the special guest.

The event observed with the theme ‘Reminiscing traditional culture and practices’ was attended by students and teachers in their colorful traditional attires.

A full traditional welcome of the special guest was done by the cultural troupe comprising of students of GHSS, Thangjam.

Speaking at the event, Kumar Ramnikant expressed that the tradition and culture is passed down to us from our forefathers from generation to generation and stated, “Society without culture is a tree without roots and knowing your culture is like knowing your roots. If the root is strong, you will be standing against all the odds.”

He congratulated the school authorities for such initiatives and to the students who showcased their talents through different activities in the program. He encouraged the students not to be disheartened to be studying in a government school but rather take opportunity to learn from the qualified teachers and exhorted to dream big and dream higher.

He also kept the mic open for students to interact with him and a student by the name Tsabala Sangtam asked the DC of his journey of becoming an IAS officer. Ramnikant shared his stories beginning from his schooling days to UPSC exam attempts and achieving success to the gathering.

He shared that God blesses in his own time while narrating his story of getting through in UPSC in his 4th attempt and encouraged the students not to give up on their dreams.  

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Rishilemla and invocation was spoken by Hechila Chang. Meanwhile students of class XII led the gathering to sing their school anthem followed by a welcome address from Imkongsenla Sangtam, Principal, GHSS Thangjam.

Students walked the ramp showcasing traditional attires of and modern outfits, a reminiscence of the past and present. The Khiamniungan girls of the school demonstrated the making of cotton into thread after which a folktale drama competition was held among the four houses of the school. In which, the students performed the legendary love story of Jina and Etiben.

Later, vote of thanks was delivered by ZachisatoTetseo and benediction by Selongpila Sangtam.

After the formal programme, the special guest inaugurated the drinking water and hand washing station of the school.

The highlight of the day was the house-wise outdoor indigenous competition of folk dance, top spinning, fire making, tug-of-war and bamboo climbing among the students.

The school will observe their annual games and sports on September 8 and 9 and the competitions held were part of it.
