Dimapur: Arrested former Education Director AS Rengma has admitted to being involved in three cases relating to the bogus appointments in the Education department, according to Police sources. Earlier, Vikhiho, a co-accused in the scam had revealed that Rengma was involved in 40 cases. Vikhiho has reportedly admitted that Rengma had appointed three of his brothers in the said department as a favour towards bringing in ‘clients’ for him. Rengma is also reported to have said that his signatures had been forged on the papers which implicate his involvement in the scandal. Reliable sources have also said that the former Director was told by investigating officers, “Based on your statement, people will be arrested. Otherwise, based on other people’s statements, you will be arrested.” Rengma was reportedly not revealing the true picture of the case when questioned.

The Rengma community, according to a source, is lobbying hard to have Rengma moved to a hospital. If this happens, it could hamper investigations into the case, a Police official said.  Reports of political interference have also been received. However, as there are a total of 263 cases relating to the bogus appointments, Rengma can be arrested later on other counts related to the scam even if he walks out from Police custody now, Police said. A source further revealed that Rengma has not been receiving his pension since his retirement in May last year on grounds of suspicion of his involvement in the scam.
