Retain border magistrate at crucial juncture, villages appeal

DIMAPUR, JAN 29 (MExN): Writing to Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner TN Mannen, the Governor Camp Area Villages Union today urged that “in the interest of one and all”, the present Border Magistrate of C Sector, Peter Lichamo, be retained to the same post of assignment till such time that the issue of construction of the water pump irrigation project at Doyang River under Liphanyan Village Area, by the Assam Government, is resolved or settled.

An open letter addressed to the Commissioner stated that although the Lotha Students’ Union has been tirelessly rendering their efforts and initiatives, and with intervention from the concern authority, “the tension is still high and the situation may go out of control anytime in the near future.”

The immediate demand of the union is revocation of the Joint Border Magistrates’ decision taken on October 13 last “which is the root cause of the prevailing war-like situation in the area.”

Peter Lichamo’s presence in the next border magistrates’ meeting is “very important and necessary” in the next joint meeting for official revocation or withdrawal of the agreement, the open letter said.

Further, a shift of responsibility at this juncture would make the matter worsen and more complicated, it said.
