An orientation programme for mentors of Arju centers is underway at Magnus Hotel, Mokokchung which is organized by the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) under the aegis of Nagaland Education Mission Society, Samagra Shiksha Nagaland, scheduled on September 9 and 10.

This is a 10-month pilot project programme.

Members from 12 Arju centers attended the first-day orientation programme where, in the first session, Y Nuklu Phom, Team Leader, Lemsachenok Society, spoke on the relevance of traditional learning centers in modern times. Sentilong Ozükum, SDO (C) Mokokchung, spoke on ‘Self and Society’ in the second session.

Arju is the Ao word for a traditional male dormitory, equivalent to an academy, where young males live together. Likewise, girls, after attaining a particular age, resided in a common dormitory known as “Tsuki.” The Arju and Tsüki served as traditional repositories of rich oral literature, history, culture, and traditional knowledge.

The purpose of the orientation programme was for, the revival of the Arju and Tsüki which would serve as a supplementary learning institution to inculcate joyful traditional and apt modern-day life skills to enhance comprehensive holistic education to students from rural areas, which will also ensure the retention of school dropouts, complementing the New Education Policy 2020.

Earlier, Shilula Imchen, Associate Pastor Women (MTBA) pronounced the invocation, while Chubala Yaden,  Youth Mentor, Fazl Ali College Union Church, led the Vesper.
