Revoke appointment of New Market GB, demands RPP

Dimapur, October 2 (MExN): The Rising People’s Party (RPP) today stated that the appointment of “non-indigenous person of doubtful ancestry” as Gaunbura (GB) of New Market, Dimapur is “nothing short of outrage” and demanded its revocation.

"The State Government should immediately revoke the appointment of one Abdul Kayum Talukdar as GB of New Market, Dimapur... His appointment is illegal and an insult to all Nagas,” the RPP asserted in a statement received here.

The concerned GB is the news recently after he was alleged to have kidnapped by the NSCN (IM), but the latter denying the same and instead accusing him of “involvement in an issue where Naga patta holders were apparently threatened in Assam.”

The RPP further maintained that Talukdar’s appointment to the “GBship is a direct threat to Nagas’ identity” when they are confronting the challenging issue of illegal immigration into the state.

“Unless the State Government revokes his appointment it can be safely assumed that the government is directly responsible for facilitating illegal immigration into the state,” the RPP asserted.

Further noting that a GB is empowered to issue Residential Proof Certificates (RPC), the RPP wondered “how many RPCs he may have issued thus far to people of doubtful ancestry.”

The district administration of Dimapur is strongly urged to check all the RPCs issued concerned GB “since his GBship, and declare those ‘null and void,’ it said.

Thereafter cancel all the subsequent birth certificates, driving licenses, and trade licenses issued to such persons with immediate effect, it added.

The RPP also questioned under whose authority the concerned GB was appointed and demanded answers by Commissioner, Nagaland.

“The various GB associations – the custodians of Naga customary laws and tradition, should remove Talukdar from their union membership, and also prevail upon the State Government to revoke his appointment,” it added.

“The people of Karbi Anglong should also realise that both Nagas and Karbis have a common enemy,” the RPP added.

The RPP also accused the Assam of using “insidious policy of pushing and encouraging settlement” of illegal immigrants  in Nagaland border areas, which is not only detrimental to the Nagas but the indigenous population of Karbi Anglong.

Accordingly, it appealed both the KAAC (Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council) and the Nagaland Government to jointly tackle the issue before it’s too late.

The RPP further pledged to pursue the case of till the appointment of the concerned GB is revoked.
