DIMAPUR, MAY 16 (MExN): Chief Minister of Nagaland Neiphiu Rio has written to the Prime Minister of India recommending the case of Chekrovolu Swuro of Nagaland for inclusion of her name in the Arjuna Awards.
Rio in his letter to the PM dated April 30, 2013 has stated that Chekrovolu Swuro has excelled in archery at the national and international levels, having represented the country at dozens of international meets and championships including the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Swuro has won more than 80 medals at the national and international levels, including medals at the World Cup and Asian Championships, and her achievements have brought joy and pride to the whole country, Rio stated while adding that as a women athlete, she has inspired youngsters from all walks of life, particularly women across the country, especially in the far corners of the North Eastern Region.
The letter to the PM has also pointed out that Swuro hails from one of the most remote corners of the country and belongs to a very humble background. “Her story of achievements is dotted with immense difficulties and sacrifices, and she is an inspiration for the youth across the length and breadth of the country”.
Pointing out that Nagaland has not had a single recipient of the Arjuna award so far; Rio stated that Swuro is the most deserving case to be considered for the prestigious award. “Bestowing the award upon her will also ensure recognition of other youngsters in this trouble torn region to come forward and participate in the mainstream sporting activities more enthusiastically”.
Rio has also stated that recognition through Arjuna award will create a positive sense of belonging amongst the youth of Nagaland and the North Eastern Region. As President of the Nagaland Olympic Association and the Nagaland Archery Association, Rio stated in his letter to the PM that he was recommending her case for consideration.
